The advances in basic science from this project will benefit everyone through a better understanding of how DNA information is maintained in living organisms. This work will lead to a better understanding of how DNA sequences change over time in the process of evolution. It will provide insight into how DNA changes to lead to cancer.

Researching mobile DNA in bacteria leads to an understanding of the evolution of drug-resistant bacteria and provides basic information on DNA replication and repair in all organisms.
