I am a broadly interested evolutionary biologist, concerned with fundamental patterns and processes in evolution. I focus on insects, but the Harrison lab likes to see the evolutionary process through the eyes of many different organisms.

research overview
- Current research in the Harrison lab focuses on examining the genetics of natural populations and on application of modern molecular genetic techniques to questions in evolutionary biology. We are interested in how new species arise, and the genetic and phenotypic changes that are important to the speciation process. Our work focuses on pattern, process, and mechanism, and involves a variety of different model systems, currently including crickets, moths, damselflies, quail, and sparrows.

Teaching
teaching overview
- I teach evolutionary biology, both an introductory course for Biology majors, as well as an upper-level course on speciation (how new species arise). I am also concerned with educating the public about the science of evolutionary biology and worked with the Museum of the Earth in Ithaca to develop an exhibit on "Speciation and Biodiversity" that was on display from March to September 2010.

outreach overview
- I participate in various educational activities designed to communicate to the public and to K-12 teachers about the basics of evolutionary biology. I collaborated in the development of an exhibit at the Museum of the Earth. The exhibit ("One Fish, Two Fish, Old Fish, New Fish" focused on the role of speciation in the origins of biodiversity.
