Lance has worked as a Reference and Instruction Librarian at Cornell since 1984. His work there has concentrated on the integration of traditional and digital library services, with a focus on web-based instruction and information literacy.

Lance also coordinates the Library's support of the New Student Reading Project. He teaches research classes and workshops and selects books and materials in Children's Literature for the Library.

Special projects have included creating and managing the Library's Book Collection Contest (2003 - 2009) and curating the Library's Mark Twain exhibition in the Division of Rare and Manuscript Collections (2010).
