He was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship in 1987 to conduct research at the Academia Sinica in Taiwan. He has served as editor of the Bulletin of Sung-Yuan Studies and served as coordinator for the Sung History Research Project under the auspices of the American Council of Learned Societies.
