  • We demonstrate two effects of post-9/11 airport security. First, security hassles and a fear of terrorist attacks prompted many travelers to drive instead fly. Because driving is more dangerous than flying, traveler fatalities increased. Second, demand for commercial air travel fell by about 5 percent following the initiation of tighter security procedures post-9/11.
