outreach overview
- Youth Education: My primary area of responsibility and interest is the youth equine educational program for Cornell Cooperative Extension and the Department of Animal Science at Cornell University. This accounts for 90% of my time. Annually there are approximately 6,000-12,000 youths and 3,500 volunteers involved in this extension outreach program. Additionally there are approximately 40 volunteers with state-level responsibilities that serve on a state-wide educational program committee and are responsible for outreach. The main focus of the program is the increase of educational knowledge of adults that work with the youth - both extension staff and the volunteers. Using the “train the trainers” educational model, the “multiplier effect” is utilized in order to maximize staff and financial assets. The budget includes a $50,000+ grant, plus another estimated $50,000+ of State, Federal, Extension, Departmental, and NYS State Fair funding. Adult Education: A small portion (10%) of my time is allocated to the adult extension audience. Most of this time is spent answering phone calls and e-mails for equine related information, networking within the industry, sponsoring annual meetings, networking with other Cornell Departments on equine industry related issues and educational efforts. I would like to do more for the adult equine industry in New York State. The “HORSES 2001, 2002, 2006” AT CORNELL conferences, sponsored by the 3 Land Grant Universities of Cornell University (NY), Rutgers University (NJ), and the University of Vermont (VT), have been outstanding educational collaborative efforts on a tri-state basis. Some of these outreach efforts can not continue without additional staff/staff time.
