Positions
The strengths of our Veterinary Entomology program at Cornell are integrated pest management (IPM) and technology transfer. My split appointment provides me with the exceptional opportunity to interact directly with stakeholders and work toward needed pest management solutions on both dairy and poultry farms. As the only veterinary entomology program in the Northeast, we are currently investigating several components of IPM from basic cultural and physical control strategies to the enhancement and adaptation of existing biological control components to the monitoring and manipulation of insecticide resistant pest populations. Incorporation of these components by our livestock and poultry producers/stakeholders (both commercial and organic) has simultaneously led to drastic reductions in insecticide use, greatly reduced pest abundance and environmental protection.

Service
outreach overview
- Our extension/outreach project advances cost-effective and environmentally sensitive integrated fly management strategies for use in dairy and beef cattle confinement and pasture systems. The confinement component resulted in (1) improved fly IPM, (2) reduced litigation as related to the public health threat of flies, and (3) pesticide resistance management protocols being implemented. The pasture component provided reliable, effective, non-pesticidal alternative fly management technologies through the use of traps and the identification and manipulation of the dung beetle complex that is such a valuable component of the pasture ecosystem. A solid farmer understanding of the presence, diversity, and importance of indigenous arthropod biological control agent populations provides extremely valuable information important for sustainable long-term management of these important pasture pests.
