research overview
- Reduced tillage Systems and Improved Soil Health for Vegetable Crops: Reduced tillage systems for vegetable production has the potential to improve farm profit while improving soil health. This will result in farms continuing to be profitable and sustainable. The CDVP is very involved in the research of these systems for the production of sweet corn, pumpkins and cole crops. Current research is focusing on the placement and use of nitrogen fertilizer and the addition of slow release nitrogen sources to reduce the chance of leaching. Season Extension: The CDVP is also very involved in researching season extension techniques including high tunnels. We are conducting research on disease control, variety selection etc. Vegetable Variety Trials: The CDVP is also very active in evaluating new varieties with an emphasis on pest resistance. This gives growers the opportunity to see how these varieties will perform in conditions similar to their own.
