Francis, Joe Douglas
Associate Professor
My research program has been concentrated in two main areas during the last quarter century. These are the areas of environmental systems and economic development in rural areas. I am currently in the third year of a multi-state project to assess economic development strategies, entitled NE-162 Rural Economic Development: Alternatives in the New Competitive Environment. Lastly, I am involved in a project to assess economic development among communities located along the New York State Canal System, funded by the Ford Foundation and by the Northeast Regional Center for Rural Development. This project will assess the impacts of HUD’s Canal Corridor Initiative along side other funding programs being actualized in this region.
My teaching program has been concentrated in one area since the inception of my appointment at Cornell University: research methods and statistics. I offer on a continuing basis four graduate level courses in methods/statistics: Research Design I: Measurement; Research Design II: Analysis; Multidimensional Measurement and Classification; and Logistic and LogLinear Models. During the next 5 years, in addition to offering these courses in research methods and statistics, I am planning to offer courses in spatial statistics, longitudinal analysis and hierarchical models.
research
research and scholarship focus
My emphasis is on applied work and this is reflected in work on land use, specialty agricultural production and marketing. I have also been engaged in developing a maketing tool for small and specialty farmers to use in maketing their products.
